With summertime’s vacations, reunions, camps, and other activities, it’s easy for dental hygiene habits to fall by the wayside. Here are some refreshers to help get back to basics.

Make sure you brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes each session. If you are having trouble staying on track or spending enough time on your teeth, try setting a timer or playing your favorite song for 2 minutes. Use short, tooth-wide strokes in a back-and-forth motion and gentle pressure. Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months–sooner if it looks frayed or worn.

Don’t forget to floss! You should floss your teeth once a day, for 2-3 minutes each session. You can use conventional floss or another interdental cleaner of your choosing. Examples of these include specialty floss, pre-strung flossers, water flossers, or other ADA-approved interdental cleaners made specifically for this purpose. For alternative interdental cleaner options, call Jolly Family Dentistry at 501.228.6360. Dr. Rebecca Barfield and our team will be happy to help you find the interdental cleaner that best suits your health needs.

Mouthwash can also be a great addition to the oral hygiene routines of some people. Mouthwash should not be given to children under 6 years old and should be used with caution thereafter. Do not swallow large amounts of mouthwash, as many contain alcohol and could lead to intoxication. Make sure child mouthwash use is age-appropriate and supervised by an adult.
